My Favorite of the Firing

This is my favorite cup of the firing, actually there are 8 of them. Experimented with a new type of Madara glaze (subbed Amakusa porcelain stone for Kamado Feldspar). Makes for a more matte surface that interacts a bit differently with the Ame glaze. It’s three glazes, 2 types of Ame and the new Madara.

  1. This, and the vase, are really wonderful. You must be very happy with these peices. Thanks for sharing!

  2. I really like the line before the base. I think it makes the glaze area merge nicely with the rough clay. (could I call that area a intermediary perhaps?)

  3. Thank you Stefan, for your comment.
I like this line too, for practical purposes, it keeps the glaze from running onto the foot in many cases.
I started doing this on sake cups, because I was making them in the form of Oribe tea bowls, of which many had this type of trimming around the 'hips'. It worked and looked so well on the sake cups, I started doing it with tea cups as well, although with other glazes and for unglazed pieces, not having that line at the bottom seems better. It doesn't look as nice if it's not muted somewhat by the glaze filling and rounding it off.

    Cheers!

  4. I just looked through the whole series of photos. Very nice pots and glazes!

  5. thank you. I like your work to! We seem to be working with tradition in the same way; not in opposition but as artists in a new time. Do you understand what I am talking about?

  6. I do understand what you mean, and I tend to agree with you. This has been one of the most difficult things to understand, where to stick to the purely traditional, and where to move off in new directions, or better yet finding a way to merge the two in a pleasing way.
