Here are some test tiles from a test I did this afternoon of a glaze for hikidashiguro.
It is 50/50 Benigara (RIO)/Mixed wood ash
- the 4 test tiles, 2 in white clay, 2 in red. Far right was quenched in water, far left was buried in rice hulls, middle two air cooled.
- (left)The rice hulls turned the body black and gave the glaze surface more shine.
- I couldn’t tell much difference between the air cooled tile and the water quenched tile (right).

Hi Mike,
What temperature did you fire to?
Orton Cone 9 seemed to do it.
Mike,
Have you tried your local ceramics supply store? I have a pair of long handled things that have a curve to grab rounded objects.
Hello Ron,
Fancy meeting you here.
Hi Dave,
I’ve found some tongs at various places that seem acceptable, but the aren’t long enough. One of the places where I’ll be yanking from will be pretty deep. I might just buy a regular pair and weld some handle extensions to it.
